I have spent more than 30 years trying to understand life from the viewpoint of the Gnostic, Sufi and Mahayana Buddhist traditions.

The only things I know for sure are:

  1. This is a big universe and none of us is very significant in it.
  2. The best thing you can do is try to help others without wanting recognition.
  3. If we want to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem, we  need to see our weaknesses and struggle against them. We need to learn to think more clearly, to remain steady and compassionate under fire, and to develop our physical skills and common sense.
Stephen Hawking has estimated that if the rate of the universe’s expansion one second after the Big Bang had been smaller by even one part in 1017 the universe would have re-collapsed and no intelligent life could have evolved. [The Physics Book – Pickover].
